The Development Corporation of Abilene, City of Abilene, and Taylor County Announce Expanded Development within Lancium’s Clean Campus through Crusoe’s 998,000 Square Foot Data Center Project

November 19, 2024 — Abilene, Texas — The Development Corporation of Abilene (DCOA), in continued partnership with the City of Abilene and Taylor County, is pleased to announce the latest milestone in the growth and expansion of Lancium’s Clean Campus in Abilene, Texas.

“The new development leads the way for further innovation and expanded job & investment opportunities in Abilene and Taylor County, Texas,” said Misty Mayo, President and CEO of the DCOA. “Lancium & Crusoe’s projects are representative of the type of work the DCOA prioritizes – working directly with companies to create opportunities for future generations of Abilene families.”

The DCOA works to build the future Abilene by attracting and sustaining industries that support job creation, foster strong business, and ensure a prosperous community. The DCOA assisted in the expansion of Lancium into Abilene and Taylor County in 2021, where Lancium annexed over 800 acres into the city limits to be the home of the flagship Clean Campus.

Since breaking ground, Lancium has been fulfilling its commitment to invest in Abilene and Taylor County by utilizing their capital to develop the land and build a new 200 megawatt electrical substation for the campus.

“This data center model combines Lancium’s expertise in clean energy with Crusoe’s innovative AI infrastructure, maximizing benefits for both Abilene and the industry,” said Michael McNamara,
Co-Founder and CEO of Lancium. “We are very proud to be part of Abilene, and we will continue to partner with the Abilene community as we develop our site.”

Lancium, as the owner and master developer of the Clean Campus, is leasing approximately 90 acres to Crusoe, who specializes in data center development. Crusoe is building 998,000 square feet of data center which is scheduled to be leased to a Fortune 100 tenant in 2025.

“Given its leadership in renewable energy and strategic location, working with Lancium in Abilene allows us to build a facility that pushes the boundaries of sustainable, high-performance data center design,” said Chase Lochmiller, Crusoe’s Co-Founder and CEO. “We’re grateful for the support of the City of Abilene, Taylor County, and the Development Corporation of Abilene in bringing this vision to life.”

There is an estimated combined capital investment of $3.4 billion and a projected creation of 100 highly skilled jobs through the initial phase of the project within Lancium’s Clean Campus.

“Each company attracted to the City of Abilene builds on this foundation, creating meaningful economic impact and, importantly, opportunity for our residents,” said City of Abilene Mayor Weldon Hurt.

“This project is great for Taylor County taxpayers,” said Taylor County Judge Phil Crowley. “The extra business revenue will boost key emergency services, strengthen our infrastructure, and keep important County programs going that help our residents. This investment in our future will directly benefit the people of Taylor County.”

“The developments by Lancium and Crusoe mark a powerful step toward building the future Abilene and Taylor County,” said Shea Hall, DCOA Board Chair. “The DCOA is proud to support this generational project that will elevate our community and drive sustainable growth.”

Choosing to call Abilene home allows companies to collaborate with four universities and state-of-the-art technical training facilities for high school and college students to build the best workforce pipeline in the country. The campus will enhance the community’s workforce, tapping into a skilled labor force in the technology industry. With these advancements, Abilene is positioned as a premier hub for data centers and emerging technology.
