FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New Phase of Development Creates Opportunity for Up to 8 Buildings
and Hundreds of High-Paying Technology Jobs in Abilene
(Abilene, TX) – The Development Corporation of Abilene (DCOA), the City of Abilene, and Taylor County are proud to announce the approval of Project Radiance, an expansion on the Lancium Clean Campus, bringing the opportunity for hundreds of new, high-paying technology jobs to Abilene.
The DCOA works to build the future Abilene by attracting and sustaining industries that support job creation, foster strong business, and ensure a prosperous community. The DCOA assisted the expansion of Lancium into Abilene and Taylor County in 2021, where Lancium annexed their campus into the city limits to be the home of the flagship Lancium Clean Campus.
As the owner and master developer of the Lancium Clean Campus, Lancium developed a new 200-megawatt electrical substation with an additional 1-gigawatt electrical substation under construction. Lancium is leasing a portion of the Lancium Clean Campus to Crusoe, the first specialty developer on the site. Crusoe is already constructing hyperscale data centers, marking the beginning of a new era for Abilene to play a critical role in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
This expansion provides the opportunity to develop up to eight total data center buildings, with the potential to create hundreds of new technology jobs in the Abilene community. These positions will provide opportunities for skilled workers, IT professionals, and engineers, as well as entry-level roles in one of the fastest-growing industries in the country.
“Our mission at the DCOA is to build the future Abilene by attracting industries that drive economic growth and create new jobs,” said Misty Mayo, President and CEO of the Development Corporation of Abilene. “Project Radiance is a testament to the strength of the Abilene and Taylor County economy, the long-term vision of our community, and the opportunity for transformational growth for the Abilene community.”
“The Lancium Clean Campus represents a new era of innovation for Abilene,” said Abilene Mayor Weldon Hurt. “These positions will allow families to build their futures right here in West Texas.”
“This additional tax revenue investment in our future will directly benefit the people of Taylor County by boosting key emergency services, strengthening our infrastructure, and keeping important County programs going that help our residents,” said Taylor County Judge Phil Crowley.
Michael McNamara, CEO of Lancium, emphasized the company’s role as the master developer and Lancium’s commitment to expand in Abilene. “The Lancium Clean Campus is designed to provide the infrastructure and energy solutions necessary to power the future of artificial intelligence. With Crusoe as our specialty developer and more to follow, we are building a foundation that will drive long-term economic and technological growth in Abilene.”
“Abilene’s leadership in innovative technology makes it an ideal place to collaborate with Lancium and develop cutting-edge, sustainable data centers,” said Chase Lochmiller, Co-Founder and CEO of Crusoe. “We appreciate the support of the City of Abilene, Taylor County, and the Development Corporation of Abilene in turning this vision into reality.”
As data centers and artificial intelligence continue to expand, Project Radiance creates new opportunities for students to prepare for careers in technology in Abilene. The project is expected to drive workforce development efforts starting at the high school level. This provides the ability to support education initiatives and industry partnerships that will allow students to explore pathways in technology, data center operations, and high-performance computing.
Shea Hall, Chair of the DCOA Board of Directors, highlighted the lasting impact of the expansion. “Project Radiance will define the opportunities available to future generations in Abilene.”
The DCOA, City of Abilene, and Taylor County remain committed to fostering long-term partnerships with Lancium, Crusoe, and future specialty developers as the Lancium Clean Campus continues to expand. While details of potential data center tenants have been released, a formal announcement has yet to be made by all companies involved.
